A little thing that happened yesterday

It has been unbearably cold for us all week. Temperature was down to zero one night and hasn’t gone above freezing for days.

All this cold weather meant that we never opened the curtains and insulating blinds. We also had to drape the windows in the dinning room (previous owner’s sun room) with blankets. It worked by the way, which tells me I have a big project ahead of me for all those windows!

We’ve had very low fuel, because the propane guy couldn’t get out here to deliver to us, or anyone. You see, the snow and sleet froze solid and all the roads were closed. All of them. To further conserve fuel we turned the heat way down to 62, closed the doors to unused rooms (big house) placed a space heater in the living room, and when it got down in the teens during the day we even turned on the electric oven to help warm things up a bit. The oven has a cast iron lining and holds onto its heat for hours helping to heat the living/kitchen area.

So yesterday afternoon we were buried under blankets in the living room and trying to stay warm. When we heard a loud smack on the front room window, Bob jumped and said, “What was that?” I told him I thought it might be a bird and then got up to look out on the porch.

It was a bird, a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker to be exact. It had crashed into the window so hard it was laying crumpled on the bench and not moving. I went over to check and see if it was alive. It was, although it had knocked itself silly.

Leaning down I gently picked it up and brought it into the house. I found a small box, lined it with a hand towel and placed him inside. Then I covered the top loosely with another small towel, and put him in the bathroom where it was quiet and a bit warmer. About 20 minutes later I thought I heard some scratching noises and went in to check on him. He was sitting up and giving me a wary look. Putting the cover back over the top I took the box out to the porch and set it on the bench. I uncovered it and told him I hoped his headache didn’t last too long and that he would be more careful when flying about windows.

He wasted no time listening to my admonitions. He just flew out of the box and headed towards the setting sun.

I have been in awe of these birds since we moved here. Holding one in my hands was a gift and I am glad that he was able to fly. Maybe he will come back to visit? And though I probably won’t know the difference between him and the others, it will be fun to imagine that it is him.

We have hope that tomorrow will actually give us the 36 degree high the weatherman promised and that our propane will be delivered on Monday.

Scrap Happy for January 15th. (the late edition)

A lot has happened this week and I won’t go into it, but I HAD TO make a Scrap Happy Post.  I actually have several little items I have worked on but will start with this one first.

When Bob and I first got married we bought a really nice blanket for our bed.  That was over forty years ago and it had been well used by us, and then by the dogs since moving here to Alabama.  Frankly, it was quite warm for California weather, but simply insufficient for the winters here in N. Alabama.  Ergo, it became a dog blanket.  And pups, being pups, well, it did get some abuse.

So I measured and trimmed off the ugly bits…

Then squared and pinned the whole thing to split it down the middle.

I chose a leftover bit of flannel from some ten years back when I tried my hand at making pajama bottoms.

Cut into 2.5 inch strips, sewn end to end, the strips were folded, pressed, and then stitched as binding to the edges of my personal blanket.  I basted the backside of the binding so I could hand stitch it into place with embroidery thread… Which just happened to be an ombre of colors from the old paisley flannel.  To be honest about the thread; the one skein I had on hand went much faster than I could have imagined and I had to go searching for more online.  Amazingly, I found that this particular thread is still available after all these years and the newly produced thread matches perfectly to the old!

I would like to tell you that I have actually finished this blanket, but with ZERO DEGREE WEATHER overnight and not breaking freezing for the next few days, well, I am using it anyway and putting in a few new stitches each day.  But, the basting is holding and I am staying warm at night!

And that my friends is a comfort.

ScrapHappy happens each month on the 15th.  The many participants are listed below, and although they don’t participate every time, it’s always fun to see what they have created from their scraps!

Oh yes, and the reason for this blanket being made in the first place?  Well, it’s because Bob is always too hot when sleeping and I am always too cold!

Not quite right

I have been working on UFO’s again in my effort to clear out space and move things out the door.  So last week I took my (finally) quilted Winter Solstice to the fabric store to find a good match for the darkest blue in the fabrics I used.  I’m still wondering after all this time, years to be honest, why I did not buy the binding fabric when I purchased all the rest?

Not a clue.

Well, I had the shop lady helping me to look for a good match and she talked me into buying the fabric you see in the picture below.  I wasn’t sure, but she insisted that it worked because all the colors were in the other fabrics.

Is it me?  Now that I am home and looking at it I’m really not sure.  Please share your thoughts.  Does it work, or are the little buds in the pattern way out in left field for the style of the quilt and the other fabrics.

Second issue:  Look at the cut edges!  I have never received a quilt back with edges trimmed that out of whack!  I can fix it, but,  I paid them to do it.

This is the original pattern design by Holly Hunter below.

Please do share your thoughts and don’t be shy.  It’s waited this long for a finish so a few more weeks of searching won’t make that much difference at this point.  😉

NOTE:  a UFO in quilting means “UN finished object.”
