Friday Fictioneers: a learned response

Normally, Friday Fictioneers is a 100 word fiction writing based on a photo prompt.  However, today our hostess,  Rochelle at Addicted to Purple,           has included a video with with her FF entry.   I watched it and…

Suddenly I was deep in memory,  four again, and living in California…

In my youth I had a little friend who lived two houses down from me. We had the best of times playing in the back yard.  We spent hours digging under trees, burying treasures, making mud pies and just running and laughing every day.  We were four and the world was wide and ready for exploration, discovery and learning.

However, at the sound of an airplane, my little Korean friend would scream and run in terror to dive beneath a table or chair.  Inside or out it was always the same.

She was inconsolable.

I didn’t understand.

Suddenly, I do.

OOOH!  an UPDATE

On thinking about today’s post I remembered something my mother said about her terror at the sound of an airplane overhead:

“This is ridiculous behavior.   She isn’t old enough to have experienced the war over there!”

So I went to do some fact checking…

The Korean War began in June 25, 1950 and ended on July 1953.  So, yes, my mother was correct in stating that she could not have experienced the planes and the bombings there.  She and I were only four and born in 1953.  This makes it about 1957 when we met.

However, here is a quote on the Korean War that I found on the History Channel’s website:

The Korean War was relatively short but exceptionally bloody. Nearly 5 million people died. More than half of these–about 10 percent of Korea’s prewar population–were civilians. (This rate of civilian casualties was higher than World War II’s and Vietnam’s.)

In consideration of this information, and the realization of the violence her elders endured, I find it quite plausible for my little friend to have reacted in this way.

The flames are all long gone but the pain lingers on… ~ Pink Floyd

In Memoriam

It is with sadness I tell you that Miss Kitty was killed last month.  The irony of the situation is that she and Neville had been living up on the Mountain Farmlet for the past year with no problem at all.

Each week we drove up to the Mountain Farmlet to work.  We also  replenished her and Neville’s food stores, and put fresh water into the large font.  And each week she was happy to see us and lavished us with attention.  She loved to follow us on the trail and keep us company.

Recently, Bob was up there working on greens maintenance and noticed her back behind the house with her catch of the day.  After the weekly feed and water fill-up he then left to go work around the outbuildings.  He said that when he returned to the truck he found her in the road.

She was six years young.

On our first meeting she was very shy,

This winter we often found her sunning on the bridge near the pond.

BaskingDo you see her?

A native planting with lovely blooms I think.

NOTE:  I know some of you will wonder why we didn’t just bring the kitties here to live.  The fact is, that Miss Kitty simply refused to be picked up.  For all her affection, and the petting that she loved,  if you picked her up she would try to eat you!  So we let them both stay.

Neville is now here with us.  He has adjusted to life with Claus and Lil’ Bit very well… though Lil’ Bit is not so forgiving of his attitude when he first arrived…

King-of-everything

because he wanted (still wants) to be KING OF EVERYTHING!  😉

Friday Fictioneers: the contract

Thanks as always to Rochelle at Addicted to Purple

The Contract

He sensed that the god’s offer to make him king for a thousand years was a trick, but it was his greed made him agree to the bargain.  He’d been given a fortnight to think it through.   He read the simple contract over and over and couldn’t find a flaw. Waiting till the last possible moment he signed the parchment.

I, king Bergamond, agree to surrender control over my kingdom to my brother if found unfit to rule. In exchange for this promise I will stand watch over my kingdom for 1,000 years.

Semantics had always been his brother’s forte.

ICING: on healing

NOTE:  When I mentioned my new posting schedule I said Wed and Fri,  and that anything other than those days would be icing.  Today’s post is icing.  😉

I have been working out on my Pilates reformer to try to gain strength and mobility.  It is working!

stottpilatesspx-2T

I have been riding my bicycle several times a week and this morning managed 4.5 miles using the full range of gearing!  Only 8 speeds, but I felt like a champ when I got home.  (Tom, this will certainly be a baby step to you!)  😉

(Mine is Blue with several city commuter mods)

Then I got off and tried to walk on our little street to cool off.  I made it to the neighbors mailbox (150 ft + or – ) and had to turn back.

I am finding it strange to be able to perform Pilates, with a reformer assist, and to be able to ride with no noticeable pain during the ride, and yet I am still unable to walk or stand for too long.   Or at least, in the case of standing, for as long as I would like.   And although sitting is much improved…  is that really a plus?

Frustration.

Then I think:  Several weeks ago I was in the lightest gear and only able to make my legs move up and down with the pedals for a simple circuit of my street, and any walking was with a cane.  Today I was able to use all 8 speeds and no longer require a cane.

I went inside, showered, iced down my knee and now feel fine.

I persevere.
