Saturday Sanpshots: up close and personal

Yesterday about 6 PM I was out with the geese in the front yard

Honestly, you’d think they hadn’t seen grass before!

When we moved here I never gave Lantana a thought in my gardening plans.  My reasoning was that in this environment if it would not be perennial,  it was  not worth my time or my interest.

I was wrong…

I had forgotten how quickly it grows, how happy it makes the hummingbirds and butterflies, or how colorful it can be.  It blooms all summer and just looks nice!  So, for 99 cents a plant, this color combination was worth it as a temporary color fix!  These colors remind me of rainbow sorbet on a hot day.

Not remembering if it had a *scent or not I went in for a quick sniff…
and immediately jerked back!  It seems that the quarter sized bloom clusters are a nice place to hang out if you are a miniature crab spider!

Consider this,  if the compound flower is only quarter sized, and you are small enough to grace the surface of only one of the individual flowers, well then,  you are very tiny indeed!  Don’t see the spider?  Click the photo for a closer view!

*The flowers do not have a scent, however the bush itself is highly aromatic, having a pungent, spicy aroma when brushed against.

Once Upon a Time in the West: the trick pie

My husband made me a lemon meringue pie once.

With meringue a mile high it was the most beautiful looking pie I had ever seen!  I was so excited that he had baked it for me, because it is my favorite pie in the world.

Later that night after dinner, we served it up… took a bite, and for an instant we were in heaven…mmmmmm…

Then suddenly, and with a simultaneous “GaaaACK,” we spit it out.  (You see, the pie tasted perfect at first, but then a vile and bitter taste burst into our mouth.)  Both of us where prune faced, and he said,  “I don’t know what I did wrong!”  We looked over the recipe and talked through the steps together trying to discover his mistake.  The instructions said to add the zest of one whole lemon.  He had added the whole lemon peel!

Now you need a bit of back story here…

I loved my mother but she had a few bad habits.  One of which was to help herself to anything good in the refrigerator.  She would walk in and just go straight to the refrigerator and help herself!  No “may I?”  or “Is this for later?”  or “Are you saving this for someone?”  She just got it out and ate it!

So, after laughing heartily we decided to keep the pie, and placed it back into the refrigerator for mother’s visit the next day.

Do you think me evil?  😉

As predicted, Mom came the next day, walked in and put her purse down, chatted a bit, and then hit the refrigerator.  From the living room we could hear her little squeak of delight at seeing that perfect looking pie in the fridge.  The silverware tinkled, a desert plate clinked onto the counter, and all the while we were dying of stuffing back our guffaws in the living room.

Mom came back, pie in one hand, fork in the other, sporting a look of delicious anticipation,  and sat gingerly onto the couch.

She took the first bite…

We soberly watched as a smile of perfect delight radiated across her face, which was suddenly replaced by one I can only describe as abject disgust.  She swallowed, shuddered, and then meekly asked,  “What’s wrong with this pie?”

By this time we were laughing so hard we had tears rolling down our cheeks.  Quickly recovering we told her the whole story, with only a little fib at the end about not wanting to throw it away because it was so pretty.  This got her to laughing too, and from then on the incident was spoken of more than once in the family, and was referred to as, “Bob’s Trick Pie.”   Not surprisingly, for a long while afterward, she would always ask before eating pie at our house…

“Is this real pie or one of Bob’s trick pies?”

And we would laugh all over again.

Oh dear, she’s doing it again!

So it’s 4:00 AM on Saturday morning and I am once again unable to sleep.  I go to the kitchen to make coffee and want my favorite coffee mug.  Realizing it is in the dishwasher I reach for the handle and…

snAP, cracKLE, CLICK-rattle, roll…

The handle has broken.  The strange noises I can hear inside the door are the little plastic bits that once held the door latch in place.

Bummer.

You see, without the door handle working properly the door latch won’t let me in.  A broken door latch won’t let the dishwasher run either.  I find a screwdriver, and then carefully wriggle it in between the broken latch and the control panel cover.  Finding the stuck latch I am able to pry it to the open position and retrieve my mug.

I take my hard-earned cup-a-joe to the computer and begin shopping for a new dishwasher. After all, I have grumbled at that dishwasher plenty of times because it doesn’t have all the features my old one had… The one I bought on a teacher’s salary, when I lived in California.  When I could afford it…

HA!  I bought my first car for less than what they want for a decent dishwasher on sale!   Jeezelouize!

Quickly getting over the need to buy a new dishwasher I went to my new, and favorite, online fix it your own self parts dealer.  There I typed in the magic model numbers and

Voila!

My part instantly came into view complete with instructions and a video to show me how to do it myself!  😀

BROKEN PART

NEW PART

The new part complete with handle/latch assembly installed.  Trust me, I appreciated not having to do that myself!

Plugging in the new assembly I then placed it back into the door and screwed down the inside panel.

Now, I walked over to the breaker box (it’s in the wall in my kitchen… don’t know why) and holding my breath I switched on the breaker…  NOTHING.   In other words there were no Frankenstein’s monster, electrical pulsing sounds, with blue flashes and flames coming out of the front panel on the dishwasher!!!

Whew.
