Today we went to look at a little place in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. It is small, but just right for the critters of the Farmlet because it is just over two acres which is way more than they have now! The house that sits on the land is just right for a couple thinking of retirement. It is cozy, has a spare room for visitors, a basement and a screened back porch for enjoying the day, or evening, without being eaten by mosquitoes.
If you came for a visit…

We might sit on the porch swing and look into the valley while we visited.
On the way to the upper paddock I might tell you my plans to restore the little barn and make it worthy to house animals again.
And standing under the walnut tree we would look out over the hills and vales and think of how beautiful it will be here in spring.
I might share with you my desire to put to rights the bird houses and feeders here and my plans to move the herb gardens in to share space with the daffodils.
And a visit wouldn’t be any fun at all if I didn’t introduce you to my new neighhh-bor the pigmy pony
or the gaggle of geese living on the big pond next door!
However, a visit to the new Farmlet rests on financing a loan, selling (or renting) of the old Farmlet, and the acceptance of our offer on this possible new home.
On New Year’s eve, as midnight struck, I chanced to look out my window. There in the pale moonlight I saw something moving in the meadow. Stealthily I opened the door to see if I could get a better look. Making my way across the lawn I stopped silently watching. It was a deer! From the woods another came, and then another, and still another. I watched for some time as they grazed with ears pricked and muscles tensed. After a bit they seemed to relax there in the moon’s glow. While I, having become too cold, stole back inside and to bed.

Please note that the above piece is fiction.😉
It was written for the 1oo WCFGU ~ The prompt: “as midnight struck”
The vignette came about because my neighbor across the street is a bow hunter and has a big plastic deer target (looks like a statue) on his property. Once on a moonlit night I saw it there, and mused about how real it looked. When this prompt came up I remembered how real it looked on his lawn in the moonlight and ran with it. I am flattered that so many of you thought the incident was real. Thank you!
The last day of fall went out quickly, having been swept away by an eager winter storm. Yes, Winter blew in early with four inches of rain, and by noon she had begun a swift and frigid blowing. She howled around the eaves, worked her way into the house through invisible cracks and then came in through the windowsill sounding for all the world like a flute!
That will need fixing!
The lights began to flicker, and hearing all this horrible blowing pick up in speed, I decided to stop what I was doing and go have a look. Opening the back door I felt Winter’s frigid breath blow right past me. Too cold!
Standing in the doorway with my sweater pulled tightly round my neck, I listened as dry leaves hissed and tree branches rattled like dry bones. Eerie, I thought, and shivering I closed the door tight.

This morning it is 32 degrees and while the wind isn’t quite as bad as yesterday it is unrelenting. It is also making the air outside feel like it’s in the 20s! Winter and I don’t get along.
The cold, the short and cloudy days all get to me.

Yes, it is officially winter, but I have decided to greet it differently this year, to be more upbeat! I think this might help.
