For Friday Fictioneers this week I offer you in just over 100 words my flash fiction entry:
Pure Imagination
Nap time, Bethany.
Sea Urchins don’t take naps.
I see.
The sea urchins giggled uproariously as she walked away.
Suddenly from the hallway a deep-sea diver appeared with something in her hand.
“What’s that?” the urchins cried in unison.
It’s sea urchin food.
“No it’s not!” the littlest urchin quipped. “Sea Urchins like cookies!”
“Well”, said the diver, “I happen to know that urchins eat whatever they find as they creep along the ocean floor. Seaweed, dead things…”
“EEW GROSS!” yelled littlest in disbelief.
The deep-sea diver offered to make cookies for after nap.
Suddenly the reef was barren.

Lovely little story which reminds me of teaching my grandsons to suspend disbelief on a country walk – we had to cross a plank bridge with a troll underneath it!

Alicia, thank you. My teaching Profs at uni would say that my persuasion was extrinsically motivated and should have been intrinsically motivated… But a fresh baked cookie now and again is a good thing. 😉
Love this! Your descriptions of the giggling sea urchins and the barren reef were so good I was able to visualize them.
Laurie, I was hoping you would like it. I had to kind of cheat with the italics to indicate the change of voice from DSD to SU to keep it nearer to 100 Words and hope the reader would forgive the technical fault. LOL!
Just put my own little sea urchin to bed. What a great slice of life story.

Lovely story that brought back memories of our own children when they were small. It’s wonderful when family members inspire creativity in children. That was a great song. Well written. I could see the children and mother. 🙂
