Het Ptse

Shivering she got up and looked around.  She was ravenous, and she wasn’t alone.

The man there with her seemed as bewildered as she felt.  Looking about,  she could see no others, yet sensed that they were being watched.  To what purpose?

“Hey!”

Startled, the man quickly turned.  “When did you get here?”

“I was about to ask you the same.”  she chuckled.

“I can’t remember.”

“Mm.  Same here.”  She was salivating.

“You hungry too?  Shall we fi …”

“STARVING!  she roared, and ate him.

Looking into the habitat, Echerthwat mumbles, “Ti wlaays ercesp em tuo ehnw hse soed ttha.”

*Anagram challenged?  Email me here (farmlet(at)att(dot)net)  😉

NOTICE:  I’ve never done anagrams before, but needed a way to mimic an unknown language without offending any other language speaker.  😉  I also needed it to be fairly easy for my readers to translate and gain the meaning from that last sentence. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my story set up, I think the name of the last character “GartfAAnale” was throwing everyone off, so I changed it.  😯

Saturday Snaps: georgie plays

Georgie, is the type of goose that gives all geese a bad name.  He hisses, pulls out chicken’s feathers, pinches the dogs, and me!    It is unfortunate that he has such an ill temper, because on days like this, he does make me laugh with his playfulness.

The gate to the chicken’s run lets chickens in and keeps Georgie out!  The item he is playing with is the scoop I use to dispense the scratch grains… Georgie loves chicken scratch.  😉

Have a lovely day!

Fall? No… Falling!

Over the weekend Clause was surprised on his way out the back door…

Last weekend, after dark, Bob stepped out the back door to get the dog.  His foot hit the second step and kept going.  He then pitched right off the left side and landed on a plastic storage bin I hadn’t put away.  It’s been sitting there for ages and I just never put it away.    Thankfully, the bin broke his fall and he is fine, though perhaps a bit stiff.  Poor Bob!

No longer feeling guilty for leaving the bin sit there!

A word to the wise:  Never stain or seal fresh lumber that has been pressure treated.  Pressure treated lumber is very wet inside and when you seal it, then it stays wet and rots.  You must wait at least 4 to 6 months before you seal your wood.  OOPS!

Sneaky little rotten b…

Sometimes when you get going on a project all you can think about is

Gett’er done!

And unfortunately for Bob, gett’er done, got the project accomplished, but at a terrific sacrifice to his personal comfort.

I was minding the massive bonfire in the clearing (the remains of the rotten bathroom floor) when I heard him call to me…

Me, yelling:   WHAT?

Him up on the deck:  Can you just come see I don’t want to yell…

He looked pretty whooped, so I came on back to the house.  By the time I arrived he was in the back bathroom under the light and asking:  What is this?  It’s burning like [heck]!

There on his shoulders and back I saw this.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI stopped counting when I got to 60 on his left shoulder.  The larger wheals are multiple bites from these monsters, and I estimated about 200 bites.

Gallinipper2

Please click this photo to be taken to Huron-Clinton Metroparks to read more about this beast called the Gallinipper or more technically: Psorophora ciliata!

This image is not photo shopped.  The monster really is that big.  It is also much louder and deeper sounding than those little wimps that whine in the dark in your bedroom.

Now we had worked in this same area the previous Sunday and had no trouble from these fellas.  Not so this Sunday.  The troops were out in full force dive-bombing me and the dogs and leaving Bob alone.  Or so we thought…

Apparently, they were attracted to Bobs dark-colored shirt and upon landing were not noticed, that is until the burn started up.  Since Sunday the burn went away only to be replaced by intense itching.  Thankfully,  as of this morning, he has begun feeling better.

IN THE NEWS – FLORIDA

The news media claim is, that they are only a problem in the wetter portions of Florida.  Not so!  I have been reading reports about them all the way from Michigan to here.  It has been raining A LOT all summer in our neck of the woods.

So, perhaps we need to post a warning sign at the beginning of our trail?

This should do!

Apparently, they are everywhere!

NOTES:  There is some good news about these monsters in that they don’t carry disease and they eat the larvae of other mosquitoes!   It is small consolation when they are swarming you in the woods!
