At Last

At last, the sun has come along
The coldest days are over
And life is like a song
Oh, yeah, at last
The skies above are blue
My yard is wrapped up in clovers
The sunlight feels good too…

Oh, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For the sun will shine
At last

(With apologies to Etta James 😉 )

The view from my window

Sadly, I think if I want a lawn this year I will have to get out there and replant it. The winter was just too harsh and not much but weeds and daffodils have survived it.  Ahem, and much as I love my chickens, I will need to put up the electric poultry fence to keep them from eating all the seeds!!!

And poor Little Red Hen…

Little Red is finding the sunshine particularly comforting this morning.

She has lost about 75 percent of her feathers so far this spring and got an eye infection to boot!  I took her to the vet in Tennessee yesterday and now she gets eye salve three times a day to clear it up. Gasp! But every time I pick her up more feathers fall out!  Thankfully, they are growing in quickly and the weather is going to be warmer for the next few days.

Is it warming up where you are?

Photo Friday: Where is spring?

Seems that Spring is here on the calendar, yet the weather is contrary.  Hot for a week of 80 degree temps, then falling back into the 30s and 40s with lots of rain and overcast conditions.

And yet, the flora

The tulip once planted with purpose now grows where it should not… yet all the more lovely for not having competition.

and fauna

A Robin Red Breast takes a moment to enjoy the newly blossoming Dogwood tree.  Give it another week and it will be a glorious vision!

have all come out to make a show of spring even though Mother Nature pulled some April Fools pranks today.

We had mostly cold and gloomy but by the end of the day the sun showed his face and warmed our hearts.  Which inspired Kung Foo Roo and Sugar Momma to bring out the little ones and explore the great wilds of the back yard…

Their little brood are all adopted!

And then I got a rare treat!

Polly was so inspired by the sunshine that she actually took a break and went out to stretch her legs and have a little splash bath, a very long drink (it had been almost a week!!!) a few nibbles of grass, and then she returned to the nest and her trance of motherhood.

While she was out I counted about six eggs in there!

Three weeks to go and if all goes well we will have new goslings here on the Farmlet… Keep your fingers and toes crossed though.  Baby goslings are a rare hatch…

Who’s that rattlin’ at my door?

I’m sitting here alone and I hear a rattling of the front door knob…  it sounds like someone is trying to get in!!!  My heart is pounding as I tiptoe down the hall.  When I peak around the corner to see who might be there the dogs enter the living room, and taking a stance they stare at the door.  Watching the door handle moving we are all transfixed.  Bob just left for work and it’s just us at this early and dark hour of the morning!  Who’s there?

Suddenly the would be intruder jumps into view!

And there at my picture window is Little Bit.  She wants to be let in.  The dogs begin to whine and wag their tails as I, recovering from my near heart attack, go to the door and oblige her.

What a cat!

You see, I put a little belled ornament on the inside of the door handle at Christmas time because I thought it would be cheerful when visitors came calling.  I have since left it there, because she “rings” it to let us know she wants out.  I never taught her that, it was a spontaneous thing.  It happened once and we let her out and now she does it every time!  In fact, if you hear the bells and ignore her she will ring them again and come sit to watch you till you do let her out.

Maybe I should put a bell on the outside too… I think it would be a little less frightening than hearing the doorknob rattle.  Don’t you agree?

Photo Friday: Bees!

The Maples Hum a Song of Spring

Backstory

On this day I was sitting at the kitchen table and happened to look out the window. That was when I noticed the tree was a flutter with little winged objects.  I stepped up to the window for a closer look and saw that it was full of bees!  Grabbing my camera I went out for a look .  We have lived here for three years and I’d never seen anything but birds in my maples trees.

On this day there was a symphony and the orchestra was supplied from my hive.
