Fall: mountain farmlet style

Tired of working every time we go up to the mountain we decided to go up on Saturday and just enjoy the afternoon.

Bob packed the chainsaw, and I made fun of him for taking it along…

“We had that storm you know, and there are always a few downed trees on the trail!” he said.

You will have noticed the barbed wire in front of Miss Kitty?  As it turns out there was more of that barbed wire hidden in the leaves all along the edge of the creek.  How do I know this?

Let’s just say I’m glad my Carharts are made tough!  They saved me some serious damage!  Only a little scratch, and yes, I have had my tetanus shot in recent history!

We stayed until it was dark to look at the stars and then headed out to have dinner.  It was a lovely visit!

Annie, we couldn’t believe they followed us all the way around the trail! It was fun to watch them crossing logs, and hiding under bridges! (And not to worry, we are paying someone to keep them fed and watered through the week!)

I just left a comment on Celi’s blog (on Lyn’s post) saying I wished both of you could do a blog. Then realised I have been to yours! It is very early in the morning here lol.
Your photos are just beautiful. You live in a glorious part of the world.
Oh, and I am in awe of anyone who quilts…. just saying. 🙂

Glad your little tangle with the fence wasn’t serious. Luckily, the wire doesn’t look very old (relatively speaking; ) It would be MUCH harder to spot if it were as old as the house. Please DO watch for that old, rusty stuff, will you? It is incredibly nasty and can still be tough as nails in spite of being a century old! (don’t ask):
    Lovely photos (as always; )!

The bit I tripped over was hidden in the leaves. Trust me when I tell you this, but it has been there so long that the cedar posts have rotted away and fallen over. Hence, my entanglement! Also, this side of the Mtn. Farmlet was once mostly pasture… and now it is woods. 😉

You remind me of how it was for FD and me when we first moved on this place. We’d work hard all weekend clearing, cutting, building, repairing, and then in the evenings we would look up at the stars and smile at each other. Life in the country is like no other. What a lovely post Lynda. Spring will be here soon!

Here’s hoping we are ready to move by then!

Lori, we are looking forward to being there at night and seeing the Milky Way. Right now we have a bit of light pollution bleeding in from the utility pole on the road. I let the utilities turn it on for now because we aren’t there most of the time, but when we move in we may have them turn it off! Not sure yet.

I had to chuckle because right when I said out loud “when was your last tetanus shot” you answered! glad you had on the carharts!! I loved taking that walk with you 🙂

I didn’t know what Carharts were. I imagined every sort of strange thing, but now I know. I should have had my Carharts on when I backed into the barbed wire. 😉

I love seeing the kitties following you around, and the fact that you have water. It seems as though everyone’s had a nice bit of color this year. Soon, we may even have some. It’s still a little early for a first frost for us, and when I just glanced at the weather, it looks like it will be Thanksgiving before we have a real cooldown. That’s all right – 70s and 50s means no need for air conditioning, and maybe even some open windows.

One of the treats of my trip was being in a place with so little – almost no – light pollution. I’d forgotten how bright the Milky Way can be. I’m glad you took time to enjoy it.

Good GRIEF! I read your post about your pet tumbleweed and got distracted at the end when I was going to reply… loved that TW in your sitting chair in the living room! BRB!

      (BRB = be right back 😉 )

OK, I’m back and I left you a proper comment at your place. 😉

Linda, Carhart’s are my favorites, but I can only afford to buy them on sale. And strange to admit, but I buy the men’s cut. I have no hips whatsoever, and enjoy having a pair of jeans that are not only sturdy, but fit without cutting me in half or looking like jodhpurs! I had to mend the little tear in the back of one leg, but think I did a fair job of making it invisible. I wore patches as a badge of honor in HS, we all did, and now I can’t stand them. Silly, yes?

It seems to me you found some lovely color in Kansas! Beautiful! As for the stream, it runs all the time, but it is a trickle. That said, I would not want to be down in that limestone gully when it begins to rain! The water follows the limestone like a sluice and gets quite rapid, very fast! 😯 In the summer I took a little stroll and found crawdads in there! I won’t eat them, but I sure did have a childlike moment watching them. I also discovered fossils! There are lots of them in the limestone, and I have decided that I need some high topped wellies so that I can go exploring properly and not get wet feet! 😀

Sorry about the “jumping through hoops bit” – won’t make comments “on” the carousel anymore.
Yknow, after looking at your “Ferny Bits” photo again, I realised that what I initially thought was a fallen log is actually what’s left of the old post surrounded with barbed wire and fencing… So, if they (the rest of the posts) are all laying down it shouldn’t be all that hard to spot the rest of that fence line. Matter of fact, although the barbed wire is pretty rusty, the galvanised fencing still looks pretty clean… Perhaps, with some new cedar posts, it’s still good enough to restring? Am I cheap or what? 😉

Oh how lucky you are to have so much beauty at your mountain home. I love the woods and the stream. How in the world are the cats staying safe from predators? I hope they contiune to be smart enough not to wander far from the house. Loved the pic of the dogs. It is a good one. And the cats pics are very good as well.

Yvonne, we have a covered deck in the back and there is a gate at each end. We keep them latched so they can get in but the marauders can’t. We also have someone who comes daily to check on their food and water too! I kinda think that the only reason they went on the walk with us was for the company. But, then again, they may have done that with the Octogenarian when she was still there. 🙂 So glad you liked the pictures!

Looks like you had a beautiful day for a hike. I love the picture of your cat leading the way. We had a cat who did that when we’d go on long hikes (she insisted on coming along even though we tried to encourage her to stay behind). But in the summer she’d invariably run out of steam and begin panting, so my wife would have to carry her the rest of the way. She’s been gone a while now but your post brings back fond memories of those hikes.
    Loved your photos.

    • Lynda says:

Thank you, Bill, we did! These kitties are something else. I wish we were there all the time to play with them, but they seem to be getting along alright so long as we keep them in plenty of food and water. Thank you for sharing your memories with me. I love kitty stories. 🙂
