The next steps taken

We have applied for the loan, paid for the appraisal of our home, made an offer on the  Appalachian hills Farmlet, are waiting for the appraiser to call and schedule, and I am not sleeping!

I can’t stand the suspense and I am well and truly worn out.  I have tried all my best tricks to get to sleep, but it is not working.

My best sleeping tricks:

  1. Turn on Debussy low when going to bed.  (normally this works)
  2. When number one does not work then get up and drink camomile tea while reading the *LOTR.  Usually this always works!

Not this time.

“Dear three AM, we have got to stop meeting this way.  I would much rather sleep with you.”  ~ anonymous ~

What works for you when you can’t sleep at night?

    Sorry; sleep has never been a problem for me. I close my eyes, and ‘poof!’ I am asleep within a minute and dreaming almost instantly. I suspect I have a mild case of narcolepsy, if it’s possible to have a ‘mild’ case!

    So try drawing for an hour before you go to sleep!

    I’ll try to dream up some ideas!

      OK, putting my brain onto a new task (drawing) sounds like a good idea. I will try it! Thank you, Lisa!

      HA! I just read that being dehydrated can cause insomnia and that we need to drink more water. Doesn’t that sound a bit counter intuitive?

      Won’t the extra water put you to sleep only to wake you up again in the middle of the night? 😉

      • Playamart - Zeebra Designs says:

        hey
        yes, for sure it will awaken you again!

        the drawing has a bit of a scientific approach, as when you’re totally absorved in the zen process of drawing, your brain waves slow down, and you’re in alpha/dream state. (that’s why so many artists seem like they’re mellowed out on drugs – we sort of are, because the brain releases feel-good endorphins/opiates.) so even if you can’t sleep, you’ll be smiling!

        good luck!

    I go sit in the easy chair with an electric blanket to keep me warm and play on Pinterest. I know it’s a time suck, but at 3 am, who cares? It’s fun and relaxing and after an hour or so, I’m ready for bed. I haven’t pinned on Pinterest for a while because I haven’t had trouble sleeping lately!

    I understant how this suspense can be a source of anxiety.. when I can sleep, I just listen to the radio, a one with talking on!
    Good luck Linda, I cross my fingers and I hope that it’s work

    I am in suspense too, i want pictures .. did I miss the pictures? When I cannot sleep which is seldom frankly i go for a walk in my mind. You have to absolutely visualise every step of the walk as though you are a video camera. Put on shoes, lace shoes up, stand, walk to door, open door, step out, close door (this is a good game if you are in your favourite location too), lock the door, put the key in your pocket, (getting sleepy yet?) walk down the steps, along the path, onto the track, through the rushes, the sand is hot on your feet (was that you snoring?) out onto the beach, look at the surf, turn right and walk along the shore.. (there you are asleep).. ni ni

    Reading the bible and praying. Try not to be on the internet or watch TV- these will stimulate your brain even more. Will pray that you can get a good nights rest tonite. ^-^

    • Lynda says:

      You are very kind to pray for me. I send blessings back to you for your thoughtfulness. Thank you!

      I knew about the computer and TV watching. Though lately, I have been so tired I fall asleep doing either of them! 😐 I told my hubby that tonight if I fall asleep he needs to wake me up and I will just go to bed! (hope that works)

    If I have trouble sleeping (I do every night as I have a sleep disorder and chronic pain), I sometimes add another drug to my sleep & heart medication, but the best way is to ensure I get off the computer well ahead of bedtime and never watch any gripping dramas on tv.

    I drink chamomile or lemon balm tea all the time (for 25 years) so that doesn’t change.

    Sometimes sedating and calming herbs can have an opposite effect if you drink too much of them. Never drink more than 4 cups of a particular herbal tea each day. I’ve gone down the route of all the alternate therapies. But I DO notice an improvement when I don’t look at the computer at night. It’s overstimulating to the brain and damages ones eyes (in my opinion).

    You could try putting a couple of drops of pure essential oil of Lavender on your inner wrists before bedtime or a couple of drops of Bach Rescue Remedy on your tongue just before you go to bed, Lynda.

      Don’t get migraines, Julie… ergo, no migraine meds. Bob’s been telling me to take benedryl at bedtime. It would certainly put me to sleep, and probably help my allergies too! 😉

  7. petspeopleandlife says:

    So many suggestions. I am a sleepless person. No matter what. Hate to admit it but have been on anti anxiety meds for many years. Inherited insomnia from my mother. So take the med at bedtime and I go to sleep. Only sometimes I waken at 3 or 4 am which is the pits. Then work in computer and fall asleep about 6am and get up at 9 or 10am. Let dogs out and bring them back in before second round of sleep. Very exhausting to not be able to sleep at least 6-7 hours.

    • Lynda says:

      I am not a napper. 😦 I wish I could, but I always feel guilty if I try. I always think I should be doing something instead of sleeping! The bad part about that thinking is that I don’t get much done when I am that tired anyway! 😛

    I’m one who drops off to sleep without a care – no matter what. Sometimes, I do wake up in the middle of the night and might lay awake for five or ten minutes, but that’s it.

    My mom was one who never could get to sleep. I tried about everything I could think of to help her, but she just was a worrier, and when she closed her eyes, she’d start to think. I finally gave up.

    Maybe you could try one of those crazy AM radio programs, like George Noory’s Coast to Coast. After fifteen minutes of listening to the loonies who show up there, you’d be so happy and content with your wonderful life you might just roll over and sleep like a baby!

    Oh – there is a reason for milk before bed. It’s got that tryptophan in it that turkey has. My aunt swears by milk and cookies. 😉

    • Lynda says:

      Linda, I tried that warm milk trick once when I was about 25. My tummy gurgled and groaned for the rest of the night! Not long after that I found out I was lactose intolerant. 😉

  9. Deb Weyrich-Cody says:

    Omg Lynda, should’ve saved it, but I lost it! SO, instead of trying to rewrite it all, how about this…
    Once you’re all snuggled up in your cozy bed, and with long, slow breaths; inhaling on one line and exhaling the next; for as long as it takes; repeat after me…
    God grant me the serenity
    To do the best I can
    About what I can
    And leave the rest
    To You.
    Amen.
    ~~~~~~~~
    Oh, how about some hot water with honey and lemon then? (Make sure it’s local honey for those allergies; )
    • Lynda says:
      That little comments tab is fabulous for the quick one-liner isn’t it?
      Deb, I feel your pain. We need to be more disciplined and go to the comments section when we have something really important or wordy to say. Because, once it’s gone we rarely have the heart to write it all again. 😦
      That said, I thank you for your prayer suggestion for getting to sleep! As for the recipe, well, do you think some of my bees honey will be local enough? 😉
      (I am going to have a real fun time moving those bees 50 miles if our deal for the new place comes through!!! I think it won’t be so bad if I prep the area where I want them to be and then just plug the hole after dark and move them. However, Bob is already hyperventilating over that thought.)
      • Deb Weyrich-Cody says:
        I couldn’t get access from my phone, but perhaps you’ll have better luck? Marie’s taking a “Mommy break” right now, but she posted an article on moving and siting hives on her blog: plowinginpearls.wordpress.com.
        If you can’t access the blog, let me know and I’ll see whether she has it on file…
  10. Deb Weyrich-Cody says:
    Forgot about your bees, sorry (and yes, that’s local enough Smartypants; ). About moving hives – you’ve got my email, so drop me a line when you get a chance, ‘k? Did you sleep last night? Hugs…
  11. littlesundog says:
    Benedryl works for me, and so does Sleepy Time Herbal Tea Extra, by Celestial Seasonings. Although when I’m really keyed up, nothing seems to work.
    Now then, when I get there we don’t need to worry about when we sleep! We will be up organizing for a yard sale!! I’m GREAT at yard sales and usually put one on a year (at least)! Just think of all we can get done! We’ll sleep when we are ready to crash. Of course… there is always the chance that I could get side-tracked watching the geese! Oh, I do hope you have a key to the new digs by then… how fabulous will that be? I’m good at destruction by the way – ugly wallpaper OUT WITH YOU!!
    • Lynda says:
      You are just born to work, eh? Then I accept! Moving or not moving, I need to get rid of a lot of stuff! So, the yard sale is on!
      I can hardly wait to finally meet you in person, Lori!
  12. Marylin Warner says:
    If you saw Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in GHOST, you remember the pottery-making scene in the middle of the night. It’s not just sexy, but according to artist friends, working with clay, molding and creating, releases stress at night and actually brings on sleep (after you wash off the mud, of course). My sleepless nights usually follow hard days and have neck ache or muscle pain. So my go-to is Advil PM taken with hot lavender-bud tea, with a heated rice bag tucked beneath the ache or pain.
    Good luck with the loan and all your wonderful plans!
    • Lynda says:
      You know, it is difficult to get through the next day when you have had little to no sleep. And yes, tension in my shoulder and neck are also a usual symptom the next day. Thank you for your suggestions and well wishes, Marylin!
  13. sarsm says:
    No wonder you can’t sleep – I wouldn’t be able to either!
    I do the alphabet game: pick a challenge like 5 boys names or a band or a fruit or film title – whatever – and then go through each letter of the alphabet and think of the name etc.
    It bores you to sleep if you can close everything out.
So how about that? Go on; say something!
