Growing up

You may recall that earlier in the summer I had a little event on the Farmlet.  The hatching of the first chick (that’s her above in the headlines) was quite exciting for me, and over the next few days I watched as two more babies arrived into the world.

Well, as all babies must they continued to grow, and they are now about half the size of their parents!

They tend to hang around together and never really interact with the parent group.  I have no explanation for this.  I would have thought that as soon as Mama Roo and the Baby Roos were released into the yard that they would all have been one big happy family, wouldn’t you?

By the way, if you have an answer for this strange, standoffish behavior please enlighten me!  I’d love to know!

Now I originally got the Silkys to help me with hatching, and wouldn’t you know, I now have three laying hens that have been showing decidedly broody tendencies.  Ah well, better five broody hens than none!

I certainly surprised me, and yet at night when they go into their hutch they all still sleep in a pile with Momma Roo! 🙂

I love your blog! It makes me miss my farm (I now live in Birmingham Metro).

I grew up taking care of chickens. When they are young they seem to have a mind of their own, but as soon as spring comes they tend to get more interested in other chickens. We had a chicken who pretty much stayed around the house and thought she was a dog or something. Then she got her eye on that rooster and everything changed. Birds and the bees and all that! She finally decided chickens were better than dogs and people.

Hello Mandy, Thank you for stopping by and for your comments! We had chickens briefly when I was young (8 – 10 yrs. old). The memories of living on Kadota Street are some of the highlights of my childhood.

Welcome, and please come again! ~ Lynda

What teenager do you know who prefers to hand out with the ‘oldies’? 🙂 Regardless of their possible teenage ‘gang’ mentality, I would still love to reach in and touch these downy beauties!

Luci, they ARE! Maybe someday you can come find out for yourself how really soft they are… I would love to see you again. All of you actually. If you could make it that is.

So how about that? Go on; say something!
